SA LANGIT MONG BUGHAW under your blue sky
Fine Art Bali Artist Residency.
Translated as “under your blue skies,” “sa langit mong bughaw” is out of a verse from the Philippine National Anthem, Lupang Hinirang. The electic bunch seeks to blend along the poetry behind this patriotric fragment in their varied medium and sentiments. Ambie Abaño, a printmaker, captures faces at the pause of conviction. “Dalangin” is translated to prayer, and the figures and faces at stake are rubbercut print on spandex, grazing at the Filipino’s attention to faith. The reference to classical art, measurements and subtle turn to science is tackled by Pardo de Leon. On the other hand Popo San Pascual, a prodigy of color, explores the reference to hue and, most of all, the kaleidoscopic salvo that is the Filipino culture. Christina Quisumbing Ramilo has spent over a month in Bali and Yogyakarta in impressive interaction with artists from the respective locale. Sa Langit Mong Bughaw is the very avenue in which Ramilo brings together a number of similiarities between Filipino and Indonesian cultures through a use of language incorporated in her functional sculptures as well as other shared sentiments in art practice.
As diverse as the Philippines itself, Sa Langit Mong Bughaw is a substantial look at the different modes of art making that takes place within the scene. Likewise, it becomes a parallelism of sorts as the four Filipino artists bring out ways of thinking and feeling that are of resemblance to both cultures.
Sa Langit Mong Bughaw runs from 3 to 30 July 2009 in Tembi Contemporary, Jalan Parangtritis KM 8,5 Bantul, Yogyakarta,INDONESIA.
